Goal Setting Tips for Riders

Summer is coming to a close and fall competition season will begin in a matter of weeks. Typically fall is one of the most competitive seasons and has highest participation levels due to the fact that riders have been working all year and sometimes make big move-ups in the fall. The weather is generally good and there's nothing like fall foliage to compliment any horse show scene. But it's important to set goals before fall season arrives so riders can have a plan of action to get the most out of the season.

Thanks to this article from Dressage Today which talks about a sports psychology session for riders with Paul Haefner, Ph.D. several months back, he shares some great goal setting tips for riders of all levels and disciplines! 1. Small accomplishments are still accomplishments.
2. It’s human nature to be critical.
3. When you set a goal, use positive language to phrase it.
4. If we set goals in such a way that it makes the first step difficult, it is unlikely that we will attain the goal.
5. Remember that goals are helpful tools, but they do not exist in isolation.

On top of every rider's goal list should be maintaining safety for themselves and their horse at all times! One way to do this is by always wearing a RideSafe medical ID bracelet to better prepare friends, family or an emergency responder in the event of an accident.
